The concept of simplicity combined with speed was the requirement which Josef Schuchter confronted Umberto Felci with. The Esse 850 should be sailed easily single-handed or by a small crew at fast speed without the ship heeling much. Umberto Felci realised this idea magnificently. Due to the fact that the ship has a high ballast ratio and good strength of shape, the Esse 850 has a very large righting moment. This is why the Esse 850 is very stable and secure.

The «Esse 850 International Class» is the official class-unification of the Esse 850 One-Design yachts and was founded in January 2007 at Schloss Rapperswil. Its task is to enable international regattas, stimulate communication among the sailors of the Esse 850 and promote and coordinate all activities in Switzerland and internationally.
In 2010, the Swiss Esse 850 Class was accommodated to «Swiss Sailing» as a Member Class and has been authorized to perform official Swiss Championships. The class association currently counts 50 members who actively participate in regattas.
